A company in Japan called DoCoMo began offering text messaging to the Japanese population about 15 years ago. It came about because it was very expensive to get air time for making calls. Text messaging uses a very short data burst to transmit the messages. So, text messaging was a lot cheaper to do than talking on a cell phone.

Text messaging is also very conducive to the Japanese lifestyle. The Japanese believe that, as long as they don't make eye contact with someone, that person doesn't exist. If you've ever been on a Japanese train, you'll notice that the majority of the riders either have their eyes closed or they're completely absorbed in something (like a book, video game, or text phone). They do this to tune out the rest of the world and be "alone" for a while.

When text messaging reached the United States, kids loved it, because they could be in constant contact with their friends and communicate in a kind of code (text messaging shorthand). My daughter - in college - likes it better than talking to her friends on the phone, because she says it's more spontaneous. She can send out a message like "Hi R U there?" and start message-chatting if the other person responds. And, if she doesn't feel like "chatting" at the moment, she can just ignore the message and tell her friends later that she was busy.

It's for when people would prefer to not have to actually talk with someone and want to get straight to the point. You must have some acquaintances or family members that you would rather not have to engage in conversation with even though you have to make arrangements or something....so text messaging is a convenient way to get a point across without having to be awkward about it.

i remember my old nokia phone had text messaging. haha that is as far back as i can go. so i guess around 1998 or 1999 or something...

it's popular because sometimes you just want to send a quick note. not have a whole conversation.

it will last a looooooooooooong time
