Cat scratcher. You can buy them in most places where they sell pet supplies. They have ones that lay on the floor and ones that stand up right. Watch which way your cat scratches now and then get which one fits best. Also you can trim their nails. But don't have them declawed because that is very painful for the cat.

You can try claw covers, like Soft Claws. Otherwise, keep the cat's nails trimmed and whenever you notice them scratching the furniture, calmly relocate them to a scratching post and move their paws around on it to encourage them to scratch there--they'll figure it out. Then, whenever you see the cat using the post instead of your couch, reward them with a treat and some cuddling.

It is natural for a cat to do that, they will shed layers of there claws. If you can't get it to use a scratching post try putting some cat nip on it, or try using soft paws (very easy glue on claw covers). If your gonna end up hating the cat have it declawed. Better than kicking it across the room.

Do 2 things:

First - make sure they have a couple of scratching posts. Some cats like the ones with carpet, some like the ones with rope on them. Get one of each, and rub a little dried catnip into them. Most cats love the stuff.

Second, while you're at the pet store, look for pet repellent spray. I think Hartz makes one that is almost not smellable for most humans, but really offends cats.

Well I personally let my cats outside so it's not a problem

But if you don't do that, give them scratching posts. When they scratch at the furniture redirect them to the post. You might have to take their paws and scratch them against the post your self untill they get the idea.

We use these special adhesives that are sold @ pet stores and they are double sided tape and you put it where you dont' want your cats to scratch. You can hardly see it when applied and cats hate it!!!

Get a spray water bottle, and every time they are doing something undesirable, mist them with it, they hate the water. But save it for real problems, you don't want them to get used to it.
