Wool is taken from the live sheep using mechanical or electric clippers not much different from what a men's hairdresser might use, except they are bigger. The process takes a very short time and the sheep is released to grow more wool. Sheep are usually shorn once a year so that the wool fibres are as long as possible.

They are made from sheepskin (with a rubber sole). If a pair of them are made from 8 sheep, then they must be very small sheep. And yes, to make ugg boots, you have to kill sheep. (There are some synthetic ones around, but they are few and far between, and why would you want to wear them when you're likely to get accused of being a hypocrite and wearing the real ones because they look like the real ones?) The future Mrs Spidey has a pair of ugg boots, but not *this* little black duck. I haven't worn leather or sheepskin or fur for at least a couple of decades. Plus, I think they look decidedly "bogan" - not a great look.

sheep skin -- the hide- hard to use when it is attached to the sheep.

shaved = shorn -- that is wool ... used for the lining of Ugg boots sometimes, which is what I think you are getting at .. you can 'shave' the wool and glue it to other leather, thus creating fake sheepskin.

Google images for "skinning sheep" or "skinned sheep" but most I found were not from Australia, so may be disapointing to you if you are trying to slag Australia.

This question was asked last week ..

I'm not going to put any pictures on here because the idea freaks me out, but when they talk about sheep SKIN, they are talking about the main body of the animal - so they do kill it. It's like saying human SKIN, you couldn't get someone else's skin unless they were dead :|. You can't just shave skin off...

Sorry, TRUE sheepskin is the hide of the animal, so it must come from a dead sheep. WOOL is when they shave it.

"In the case of real sheepskin rugs, they are a by product of lamb and mutton. This is what we are discussing here, and not any type of synthetic or manufactured sheepskin look rugs, with or without real wool."
