I always find myself being incredibly awkward when it comes to leaving a conversation or leaving a gathering. I never know exactly the right thing to say to excuse myself from the conversation, or show myself out. Can anyone help?

pretend your phone is on vibrate and it's ringing

to leave a gathering... "I'm sorry to cut the evening short, but I have an early morning" or "I'm sorry to cut the evening short, but I promised X I'd pick him/her up in about 15 minutes"

From a conversation if I have other people around, I always say "oh Susan's here. Excuse me but I simply must talk to her" or if they have an appetizer plate, I say something like "You know looking at that on your plate. Oh, it looks so good. I'm going to run right over and get one before they are all gone." My sister always asks "excuse me but do you know where the bathroom is?" The person answers and then you can leave without question.

If it is a social gathering like a party, I simply tell the hostess that it was a great party and thanks for inviting me. If they say something like But it's so early, I tell the truth. If you have a kid, I have to get back to the babysitter. If you have an early morning, say that. I say Once you get married you turn into that old married couple. I go to bed by 10:00 each night. (If after 10, I say how this party was so good it's already kept me an hour past bedtime)

Just be gracious. That's all but if you have to leave, a simple "excuse me" just like you would if you had to go to the bathroom.

Yes it is awkward until you practice. First of all, realize that you arent that important to the party. Most people , as soon as you say ' Excuse me please' are quite happy to move on. If it is someone you know well you can add on some more details like ' I have to go now-I have an appointment or simply ' It was great seeing you' . Get some family or good friends to let you practice on them as if it were a party.
All you really have to do if it is a large gathering is go to the host and say thank you im leaving now. Thats it since they really dont want the details.
