That depends on the child and were you live. My daughter started wanting to school at 11 years of age but that is with friends. I would like her to ride the bus but that is not an option for us. It is a scary world any more. Things have changed so much since I was a kid.

My child is not even 3 yet, but my mom let me walk to school w/ my next door neighbor when I was 5 and he was about 10-11 years old. He was very responsible and my family trusted him. I wouldn't let my child walk home or to school alone until she was at least 8. Only time will tell!

I walked like 5 miles to school when I was in 1st grade. I was smarter than the rest of the kids so it all depends on how smart my child turns out to be. The younger the better though. i say this because then your child feels as sense of responsability.
It also depends a lot on where you live. Maybe walk your child to school for the first week and then if you are sure is safe let them walk by themselves.

My sis and i grew up exactly that same distance from our elementary school. My mom walked us until we were 10 and 8, but because she got a job.

She started driving or walking us again when we were in HS because i almost got abducted 2 houses away from my house when i was 16.

my daughter was 6 when she walked to school alone. She walked five blocks from a daycare to her school with another child. it was hard to allow her to do that, but i had no other choice. she was in the 1st grade.

I let my 9 yr old walk to the bus stop with her friends across the street, but I wouldn't let her walk to school.

I let my kids walk together when my daughter was almost eleven and my son was eight and a half. We live ten minutes from the school.

I'd say it depends on the area. A child can learn a route very easily, the most important thing to ask yourself is whether it's safe..
