Because the Jewish people ultimately didn't believe in Him. Paul took Jesus's message to the gentiles and the rest is, as they say, history.

Jesus teachings weren't entirely in keeping with what the Jewish tradition believed so a religion grew out of those teachings. PEACE!

Because Jesus was very subversive in his teachings. He didn't believe in the sole authority of one person (the High Priest), but believed that everyone was equal in God's eyes. He also believed that food restrictions were a product of group identity and not "divine command." Both of these beliefs were highly frowned on by the Temple.
