I am a working female who has let a male friend stay in my spare room.I have not accepted (though offered) any cash for room & board, washing etc but asked for help with garden, car washing etc. My friend has been here 1 month & so far has brushed the leaves up once & walked my dog a few times. He smokes (though not in the house) & smells of stale tobacco & I have had to ask him to bathe. He stays up late watching TV & lies in late in the morning.

You have a unique problem, you offered up your home at no charge, and now you have an unwanted guest. Asking someone to be someone they are not and hanging their living arrangement over there head is wrong. But neither should you have to feel put out in your home that you pay for. The simple solution is that your friend has to go. He can be free to be himself at his own home. Just tell him, you want to see him on his feet and self-sufficient, and to that end you are giving him a deadline to help motive him to handle his business. It works trust me, I was once the unwanted housemate. I was a little miffed that I couldn't drift along in my own time line, but I got my butt in gear and got my own place which actually makes me happier than being in a tense living arrangement. And I remain close to my friends that booted me.

It's your place. Set the rules, enforce them, or set a deadline for the person to get out. Sorry, but sometimes you just HAVE to get tough! And don't ask for rent without setting down these rules IN WRITING and getting a signatur -- that will only give him the idea that he has RIGHTS and allow him to walk all over you even more.
