HDTVs have analog tuners in them. That is, you can hook the cable directly to a spigot on the TV and watch it like you would if you didn't have an HDTV. What she'll probably notice, though, is that the pictures look worse than they did on a standard television. This is because all of the flaws in the picture that were not visible on a lower-resolution TV will now be quite visible on the HD screen.

Unless the TV has a digital HD tuner, she'll need to get a digital HD tuner for over-the-air HD broadcasts, or an HD converter box or satellite receiver for cable or satellite HD programming. These are connected to the TV using component video cables (3 RCA-type cables that provide the picture information). Unless she uses those connections, the picture will not be in HD.

Yes. If she wants to receive cable HD programming she'll have to upgrade to digital and get an HD receiver. If you are shopping, make sure you get a set with HD built in. You can also get an indoor antennae that looks like rabbit ears that will receive over the air HD programming from the local channels that carry ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, public television and WB.

*Yes she can.. the picture will look a little weird, but if she gets a digital converter she should be fine.... you can still use it wothout actually watching the HD channels, it kinda looks a littel fishbowlish... in my opinion*
