Through www.apdt.org (Association for Pet Dog Trainers) you can put in your zip code and find local trainers.
However, you may want to also rethink the class situation. I say this because in home training is wonderful, and private lessons will really focus on the specific dog.
However, if the dog is not trained around distraction, even the best in home training will not work when the dog gets into the "real world".
You may want to do both - work with a private trainer to gain initial control with the dog, but then also work through a class so the dog can get under control with outside distractions.
As for fees, each personal trainer sets their own, and is usually on a per hour basis. In the Illinois area, I've seen it as low as $40 per hour and as high as $125 per hour, depending on the trainer.

You have to decide which is best for you but I just wanted to say when I took my Pomeranian to the trainers is was a fairly large class. It was absolutely the very best thing I every did for him. Previously he was shy and would try to fight with any dog he met, and tried to bite some people. Afterwords you wouldn't know it was the same dog behavior wise. Like you, before it started I was nervous about taking him to a big class. Which ever way you go check out the trainer before you register because not all trainers are as good as some others.

A good trainer should be able to show you how to make your dog 'pay attention' no matter what is going on around it..Try Wildwood Kennels in Mt Holly , NC. The trainers name is Blaine Garland...if he is still there, and still training for the public, he can train you and your dog to perfection. I haven't talked to him in a few years, but he trained for the police dept in all disciplines, and also trained for individuals last we spoke. I don't know if he's still doing it though.

actually a class with other dogs will be ideal. the idea of a training class is to teach you how to work with your dog. even if she doesn't pay much attention in class, you will benefit from the instruction as well as watching other people interact with their dogs and getting questions answered. a group class is much cheaper and just as good, IMHO.
in the long run, your dog will need to be able to work with distractions of the real world, otherwise what good is all the training in the world if she won't obey outside your own home??

If you refuse to train your dog in a class environment, then your dog will never learn to ignore other things and pay attention to YOU. Take a class, don't do one on one.

Go talk to a trainer at a pet store (Petsmart, etc.), I don't know if they do one-on-one training but if they can't I'm sure they have references. Good luck to you and your dog

He will probably need to be in a class with other dogs as he will learn how to behave appropriately with other dogs and in different situation.
