When you approach a platform will it be announced or do you have to know?

Can someone help me understand this map:

When I get on from Wilmington how do I get to universal city. What do the rectangle white shapes mean? Do I get off at Pico? Does the train split at Wilshire/Vermont, if so, how?

Can someone PLEASE explain fully, I'm so confused.

well I'll have to give you two answers as I dont know if you
are coming from the city of Wilmington or the Wilmington/Imperial station
from Wilmington you can board metro 446 or 447 take either of these buses to 7th/Figueroa then board the red line to Universal
cost would be $2.25 for the bus and another 1.25 for the red Line (you could get day pass for $5.00 but you will still
then need pay $1.20 more for the freeway portion of those routes)
now if you are starting from Wilmington/Imperil
you can take the Blue line to its last stop which is 7th/Metro
then transfer to the Red Line to universal
here each mode of transit will cost you $1.25 )
(again a day pass is handy)

They usually announce the stops but sometimes it can be hard to hear. If you do not hear the stop announced just look out the window and you will see the a sign with the stop name on it running along the platform or outer fence.

The white rectangle denotes a transfer station where you can transfer from one line to another.

At Imperial and Wilmington board the Blue line going north towards Downtown LA, the sign on the train will probably say "7th/Metro". Get off at the last stop, 7th/Metro and proceed downstairs to the Red Line station. Then take the Red Line train north and board the train that says or announces "North Hollywood". Do not board a Wilshire/Western trains. Once you are on the "North Hollywood" bound train Universal City will be your second to last stop.

The line splits right after Wilshire and Vermont and there are trains that go to Wilshire and Western and trains that go to North Hollywood and they usually come right after the other. meaning a Wilshire/Western bound train will arrive and depart and the next train will be a North Hollywood bound trains then the train after that will be Wilshire and Western again and so on. The train alternates between destinations when going between Wilshire/VErmont and Union Station.

Also remember that if you don't buy a day pass or have any type of pass, when you buy a blue line ticket you will have to buy another ticket to board the Red Line; getting a day pass is usually a better idea when taking more than one line.

To Universal....Green, get off where it intersects with the Blue (it will be announced on the Intercom). Take the Blue till it ends (downtown) get off and get on the Red to Universal (just follow the signs). Its easy, we did it last week to Universal. When you get to Universal, walk across the street and they will provide a free shuttle up the hill.
