I could spend alot of time explaining why you need a contact lens fitting but ultimately it boils down to this. On every contact lens container you will find the following "Federal law prohibits dispensing without a written prescription." So if you do not have a contact lens prescription written by a doctor it is against the law for anyone to dispense a contact from just an eyeglasses prescription.

The rx from your regular eye exam only provides the measurement for the amount of correction for your eyes (the + or -). It does not provide the other measurements needed to fill a contact lens prescription (base curve, diameter). These parameters can only be determined during a contact lens fitting. Furthermore, different brands of contacts are made of different materials and such. Some people have sensitivities or medical conditions that affect their ability to wear certain brands of lenses. The fitting process helps find out if that's the case for you.

Contact lens fittings are necessary. You need to know what size will fit your eye without scratching it, or otherwise damaging it. Also, the prescription on your contacts isn't always the same as your glasses prescription. Just think about it this way: it's cheaper to have the fitting than to deal with the consequences from wearing the wrong contacts.

There is more to contacts that the strength of the lens- the dr. has to make sure it fits your eye precisely or you could be setting yourself up for infection. They must be fitted to you in order to be healthy. You don't want an eye infection, trust me.
