A cat's mouth is no more or less filthy than our own mouths. I ofter to let my cats "lick the bowl. That way, they do'nt bother me when I'm eating, because they know they will get the leftovers. It is natural for the "alpha cat," the owner (me), to eat first and then let the others eat. Scraps of food, especially meat, that stick to a plate after washing are a true source of germs and infection. The cat's tongue is made to scrape every morsel of meat of of a bone, and they pre-cleans the plate well. Then you must, as with all dishes, wash them with hot water and detergent. But if the cat cleans the plate, there is less scrubbing involved. I am educated, and I have a B.S. degree, minoring in health and nutrition. I let my cats do this if they want to, and have for years, and I am very healthy. So, don't worry. It's fine.

Soap and hot water takes care of anything that would offend. Especially if the plates are corningware. If the plates are plastic, I probably wouldn't let the cat lick those, the surface is too pourus and I'd not be sure if hand washing would clean it enough (though a dish washer would).

I think it is a bad habit to let your cat get in to, what happens when the cat jumps up on the Kitchen bench to lick a little more or lick your plate before you have eaten your meal?? As far as Hygene go's though if you wash it really well after i don't think anyone is going to get Sick.

The people food the cat is licking may not be healthy for the cat. The dishes do come clean after they are washed.

It's actually safe. A cat's internal temp is well over what our body temp is. Bacteria find the higher temp inhospitable to grow in. It is more likely the "gross-out factor" that makes you feel it's bad.
Your boyfriend should not really give kitty any people food or the kitty can develop the idea that people food is for them. It's hard to break them of the people food habit once it is started!
Washing them in a dishwasher really will kill any bacteria but hand washing the dishes may not. It depends on how hot the water is.
General rule: Don't feed your kitty food from your plate.
Hope this helps...

I think it is a sign of very bad manners. Your bf should scrape whatever is left on the plate into a bowl that is just for the cat, if he insists on giving the cat the remainder of his food. People food can be very bad for animals, overall, plus it can cause them to develop gluttenous habits of over-eating. Even if the dishes are put into the dishwasher and run through the sanitizing heat rinse, I still think it is kind of gross to let your bf continue to do this. Make sure the next time you go out, if the cat or dogs don't have their own bowls for water and food, to pick up a couple of them. Then, ask your boyfriend to put any leftover, remaining food into the cat's or dog's bowl, if they must, and refrain from not letting the cat or dog lick the plate clean. Certain spices and foods can cause cats or dogs to get very sick to their stomachs, too! And if I thought that dog or cat also ate off of or licked the very same dish or plate that I had just been eating off of, then there would go my appetite. I honestly would prefer to eat off any new paper plate rather than eat off of a dish or a plate that I knew a dog or cat had just licked or eaten off of. Animals are pretty flexible and they can quite often have their tongues on parts of their anatomy that would totally ruin my appetite! It is very unappetizing to me to even think of people letting any of their animals lick the dishes clean before they washed them, even if the dishes are rinsed in scalding hot water. And I happen to be a pet lover!!
