My 10 month old spaniel/shephard pup keeps breaking the fence to escape so he has to go.

I love him and he gets along great with my other dogs especially a female beagle who loves him but he does so much damage to the fence ($100 everytime he breaks it) and all my other dogs escape with him.

Every other option is all too expensive. Invisible fence costs $1000. Shock collar costs $300. Training costs $500. All costs too much money since I already spend a fortune on their food, health and shelter.

The only local shelter is a HIGH KILL shelter and charges $100 for turn ins. They will kill him within 72 hours if no one adopts him.

I was thinking maybe to drop him off at the place where I orginally found him as 4 month old pup....... since he loves to escape maybe he misses the outside freedom. Btw, we have a 10 acre property so he has more than enough space to run around in but he keeps escaping.

So is that humane way to get rid of him? He's too much to handle for us.

Invisible fences are not that expensive if you're willing to install it yourself, my boyfriend did it for about $200.

But I digress. Why'd you get a dog if you clearly couldn't afford it? I hope this poor pup ends up in a better home than he's got with you and don't you DARE drop him off randomly, even if that is where you found him.

Ok So, your making this harder than it is. Do you really even want the puppy anymore? Be honsest, or are you just fed up and dont want to solve the problem cuz thats what it sounds like. Puppy training at Petco is $99. Cheaper than fixing the fence. Or make the fence stronger, wouldnt you have learned that the first time he tore it down that obviously it wasnt working or strong enouf. If its to the point where your just sick of the dog and dont want it anymore just keep it for a little while longer while you put up an add in papers or better yet craigslist. Christmas is right around the corner and im sure someone would love a little puppy from santa this year. DO NOT DUMP IT OFF SOMEWHERE. THATS JUST WRONG

He can be taught. It sounds like he is bored. Even if he has a big back yard he may still not be getting enough exercise. Do you take him and the pack on long walks, or have him do some work around the house, agility and such. Tire him out.

Spend some time watching him and when he does to the fence...get between him and the fence and claim the fence as your own, Get a whistle or make a good noise and put your hand out as if to push him back. Get him at least 3 or 4 feet from the fence. If he get near the fence, again get between him and the fence and tell him back and use you hand as if to push him back behind an invisible barrier. CLAIM THE FENCE AS YOURS. It will take some close watch but he will quickly learn the fence belongs to you.

Sounds stupid but it will work if you will invest the time. And have other family member to do the same thing.

Dropping your pup off someplace to fend for himself is unthinkable, so let's not go there please.Contact a breed specific rescue group, they take mixed breeds sometimes. If that doesn't work advertise in the local paper or on craigslist (people on YA mention it all the time). As another poster said the wiring for the electronic fences isn't hard to install, you don't have to fence off 10 acres. You obviously have a good heart since you took home an abandoned pup, I'm sure you'll figure out something without having him killed or dumped. Good luck.

Has your dog been 'fixed'? Many times, this will help. I had a male dog wander 5 miles once to 'visit'.

Also, most newspapers allow you to post give-a-way animals for free. That is much better than dropping him off.

German Shephards are very smart and spaniels are good house dogs but require alot of attention. Perhaps he wants to be with his people. I would definitely try to give him to someone that can spend time playing and training him.

Build a much stronger fence. Then the dog won't escape. Stuff the cost of it. Exercise your dog more. Interact with it more. Don't rely on the other dogs to stimulate it.
Shame on you for wanting to get rid of it. It's your fault it's escaping, not the pups. Do the right thing. Make every effort to stop this happening and keep the dog.

Why not keep him in the house? He is a member of your family. Would you make someone in your family stay out in the cold or hot weather. The other solution is to call some of the farms around your home & see if they have room for a dog. Sometimes they will take them.

Also he is neutered. He may be trying to get to a female dog in the area. The smell of females in heat can carry for miles. Also try giving him some benodryl to calm him down during this time. make sure he us neutered it will help keep him home. dogs have a lot of love to give.

You're full of crap and excuses. Invisible fences do NOT cost $1,000. And so what if it "all costs money?" What did you expect? No vet bills? No teeth cleanings? Your last sentence shows the truth: "He's too much to handle for us." So you can't be bothered to make the effort! What did you expect of a youngster? And of course that means the puppy and your other dogs, who have bonded with him, are going to be the ones to suffer.

Oh good lord, so your one of those people who thinks it's ok to dump a dog, rather than take them to a shelter. So instead of euthanasia, they get to slowly starve to death. What's wrong with you??
By the way, my avatar picture is of my dog Tank. He was one of the lucky dogs who found a great home after being dumped. Most dogs just starve to death, or have some unspeakable cruelty happen to them.
When Tank wondered up to my front yard, he was emaciated, and had animal bites all over him. He was repeatedly attacked by other dogs, because some bites were fresh and some were healed. Why would you want your dog to suffer like Tank did??

Put an ad in the paper. It sounds like a great pup, but needs lots of room to run. Someone would really appreciate having him! Good luck!
