I think I'm being a bad houseguest. I'm staying with a friend for a few months until I get my own apartment. He likes to keep the place really cold. He wears sweats with the hood over his head and 3 blankets to keep warm at night and walks around during the day in quite a few layers.
I like a warm home. I asked if it was ok to keep the temperature at 70 degrees day and night as a compromise. He said it's okay but he keeps turning it down to 65. The apartment is extremely drafty and I always have goosebumps.
Should I remind him about our compromise or not since he's letting me stay in his home at no charge? It takes a lot for me to get warm--I'd have to wear 2 sweatshirts!

Since he is wearing layers as well then he's probably keeping it so cold because of heating costs.
Maybe you could offer to pay for half the utilities if he would turn the heat up or something.
Otherwise? get used to wearing layers!

Buy a personal small size compact heater and keep it close to whereever you are, to warm ur feet and hands. It will solve the problem to an extent.

Frankly, your friend should be more adjusting, and it is not you, but him, that should be a little more understanding. Being cold living in a home is a very uncomfortable feeling. I am just like you, I need a warm home. If I were the host, I would certainly stick to the compromise. This is not about who has more power and authority, it is about being a good human being.

Get the heater, and they don't cost much at all.

It sucks when people are too stingy to pay for heating. I'm mean, nobody likes to live in a freezer. I totally understand what you're taking about because I used to stay at some old ladie's place, and she had the heating pretty low too, so I was freezing all the time. The difference is I was renting a room in her place, and still I didn't have the guts to tell her, 'cause I knew she was pretty stingy and she would turn it down again. I think it's pretty "brave" to tell your friend. It all depends on the level of friendship I guess. If it's a very good friend I would definitely drop the political correctness and tell him: "What the hell are you thinking? We're in the middle of winter here!"

Well you are staying at their house and you aren't paying any money (you should try to do something, just your being there is making his expenses go up). Maybe you could offer to cover their heating charge while your there, otherwise just keep quiet and wear another layer. Maybe you could also just get a space heater for the room that you're in (if it's safe) and give him a little something for electricity.

It's his place he doesn't necessarily have to compromise if that's the way he likes it, that's a downside to living with someone else. He probably keeps it low so he doesn't have to pay to much for electricity. Suck it up and put the sweatpants on, it will also help you save some money to get that apartment faster.

His house, his rules. Get a hoodie and an extra blanket or move out .

What about this compromise... tell him that you will foot the gas and electric bill throughout the winter.

Good luck

well since your staying for free its kinda rude but i totaly understand. If i were you i would challenge him to a game of some sort and like bet him in some way like if you lose you have to have the heat at 70 something like that good luck but if all else fails get a heated blanket :)

You're not a bad houseguest for asking him to turn the air up, but you would be a bad houseguest if you kept harping on it. Especially since you are not paying bills. I'd say let this one go, you'll be on your own soon and you can do what you want at that time!

It's his apartment and maybe he's trying to save on his utility bill. Suck it up or find a warm motel room to stay in.
