Does it bother you when you see Xmas? I understand that it's an abbreviation, but I just don't see why you have to abbreviate Christ out of Christmas. After all, Christmas is not about giving gifts and spending money(sorry corporations), it's about Love, spending time with your loved ones and Most Importantly, celebrating Jesus!

I love the holiday season!
I prefer the terms 'Winter Solstice' over 'Yule' or 'Christmas'. The day actually is based on a real astrological event.
I've used Xmas before when saying whatever but X is used as an abbreviation, as far as I know. Once, a while ago, I asked a question about Christians using that abbreviation and there actually was one responder who was offended. I'm more obvious than that when I mean to offend. ;-)
However, if someone is going to get their panties in a wad over that, they shouldn't be on here.

USAGE NOTE Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of Χριστος, “Christ.” In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, “Christian.” But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (ĕks'məs). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas.

While I agree that Christmas is about love, it should be reserved to just that. The Bible does not state when Jesus was born, but based on study, His birth was probably in the Spring. Also, we are never told to "celebrate" or remember His birth. Jesus set aside a memorial of his "death, burial and resurrection " which is commonly known as the Lord's Supper, a memorial that is too be observed every first day of the week, Sunday.

It is good that people think about Jesus around Christmas, but as a Christian, we should be thinking about him daily, not just a specific day set aside by the catholic church.

no, xmas doesnt bother me

first off, christmas isnt about jesus
second, christmas can be to long to write on things, so xmas works out well
x is also a symbol of christ so if you really want to get technical, X is a proper greek abreviation for christ, and used to be used as such.
maybe if you knew the origins of the letter X you wouldnt be offended by Xmas

In the Bible, the name Christ begins with the letter "Chi", which looks like our English letter X. Before the invention of the printing press, when all Bibles were copied by hand, the "chi" was normally used to replace the word "Christ" to make it faster to copy Bibles. (Similar things were done with God, Jesus, and may other common words). So Xmas, and Xian, were terms originally invented by the Christians.

Today, whoever, they have changed in their usage. (Most words do change meaning over time) Today they are mosre often used to remove the word Christ from Christmas. When used in that manner, it is wrong.

I HATE seeing it written that way and don't believe it is simply an abbreviation. An abreviation geberally uses letters actually found in the word being abbreviated. Don't know about you, but I have never seen an X in the word Christmas. I think it is intended to do exactly what it says...X Christ out of Christmas.

I don't mind seeing Xmas because the Bible never put Christ in Christmas. Man took a pagan holiday, renamed it, kept part of the rituals in it and called it after the Son of God. Can you imagine calling a pagan anything after the SON OF GOD?

I understand that people do it just to for abbreviation. But there are others who use it because they dont want christ to be associated with christmas. Reality though Christ is the main reason for Christmas. It celebrates his birth. So because of these facts I dont use X-mas or dont like people using it.

Well, I've heard that the "X" comes from the Greek word for Christ. (See the wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas)

However, I think that most stores that use "Xmas" are trying to be politically correct, because let's face it, for them, it is more about selling stuff than about celebrating the birth of Christ.
