It's about as damaging as violent video games. People who commit atrocities who just happened to listen to heavy metal and play GTA are usually mentally incapacitated in the first place. The system just wants somebody to blame.
By the way, many metal bands take more influences from classical music than any other contemporary genre. How you like them apples?
I'm a Christian and I love metal bands. Megadeth, At the Gates, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Opeth, Disillusion, love 'em all. As if music with a heavy beat and insane guitar riffs will damn you to hell. Ha. What makes a band that has a screaming vocalist any more "evil" than Fall Out Boy or Elton John?

Damaging to the society? LOL...that's a bit of a stretch. What we have ti understand is that 'art' in any form has to engage the viewer/listener. Some can be engaged by JLo and Backstreet boys while the others probably need Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. As an avid metal listener(thrash, black, death, doom, avante garde..etc) I have come to realize that it can be an acquired taste, well..it actually is. And if it's only the aesthetics in the sound that attracts you, then I don't see anything wrong in it. Of course, there are many examples of porn and gore metal out there with insane lyrics and absolutely horrendous cover arts. Yes, these things can be damaging to a certain extent, if they land in the hands of a child or a pre-teenager. These things can contaminate the mind. But they can be checked, and no, I don't believe heavy or even death metal is damaging to the society. I mean I listen to everything from The Beatles,Dylan to Gn'R,Metallica to Exodus,Forbidden to Dream Theater, SymphonyX to Decapitated,Vader to John Coltrane!. Am I an anti-scoial element now? LOL

Most death metal isn't that great. The drums all sound the same and the singers just grunt the lyrics. What happened to the good metal with musical changes and break downs like Megadeth and Slayer? What happened to singers showing a variety of vocal capabilities like with Pantera? There seems to be only a few bands out there who appreciate this and do it. I hate to knock bands like Cannibal Corpse, but they are capable of accomplishing so much more musically. Death metal has failed to impress many metal heads, and as a result we've been shafted with sh!tty black metal. The best thing about death metal is the fact that it's not black metal. That's not good enough at all. We have to rely on the few remaining bands who know what they're doing (Killswitch Engage, DevilDriver, etc.) to keep metal alive. Otherwise it's just a bunch of European ******* in corpse paint who look like they got really lost on their way to an ICP concert (and don't even get me started on juggalos).
But to answer your question more directly, neither death metal nor heavy metal is damaging society. Sh!tty metal is damaging the metal genre of music, but that's about it.

Not at all. Music is embraced because of what society is already feeling.
Look at rap music. Do you think it's making people go out and act like drunken whores, criminals, and murderers? Of course not. Those things were already well entrenched in the subculture from which rap music sprang. They just figured out a way to make money off it.

I don't think it's damaging to society. I think it's sometimes damaging to eardrums, but even Mozart will hurt your ears if you crank it up to 200w.
I think the world is big enough that we should all be able to listen to our own music without intruding on others or telling people what they can and can't listen to.
We all have different likes and dislikes, that's why Baskin Robbins makes 31 flavors.

Any form of music is "damaging" to an individual, and maybe subsequently society, if a person lets it do so. Music is empty from it's own side and therefore is only what we make of it, same as any other thought, concept, matter, etc.

There are plenty of Christian metal bands that convey a "good" message through metal.

No way. I love heavy metal/death metal even though I can't listen to music as I'm Muslim. I love Disturbed and Judas Preist and Lamb of God.
