You don't necessarily have to have a high paying job to live in manhattan. Like the rest of us who started out, you live with 3-5 roommates to keep costs down. Then you take it from there. Most of us who do live in the city are typically finance/business related. Then you have your typical white collar jobs. Entertainment folks... so on, and so forth.
Celebs... who cares. They're for tourists. You've seen one, you've seen them all. And it's a nuisance, whenever something is being filmed, they block off some street where I usually go through and force me to walk around the block.
$20 sandwich... yeah, if you're a tourist. Go to Katz, they know how to make a sandwich. Pastrami.... mmmmm.... There are tons of bargains out there, if you know where to look. There's even that halal street cart guy in midtown, only serves after 9PM. You get a huge plate of food for $5. Anywhere else, that'd be $20 worth of food. Seriously, that guy saved my butt. That's dinner and tomorrow's lunch right there.

You need to come to NYC more often. I do not actually live in NYC, I like in NJ but I think almost everytime I went I have seen celebrities. I only go to NYC to shop, visit the art museum and get my brows done, lol. I have seen Wilmer Valderamma, Taye Diggs, LaLa, Quddus, Susan Sarandon etc.
My brother has seen T.I., Pretty Ricky, Hoopz, Trey Songz, Travis McCoy (of the Gym Class Heroes), Nik from Top model and Butterfly (a girl singing group), etc. He has met several celebs while he was an intern at Atlantic Records but he is also interested in pursuing a modeling/acting career so of course he runs into models all the time. He is moving out there this weekend actually.
I personally could never live in NYC, I would not mind having a place there so when I visit I could just sleep there but I would not want to live there 24/7! It is a mecca for people interested in pursuing careers in entertainment though, it is also very expensive to live there. My brother is moving into an uptown apartment with these two older women but they are not there much because they are avid travellers.
My suggestion is to first find a "sales" job out there or a job you can actually qualify to do, good luck on finding your own place because it is VERY expensive to live adequately/average. Most people cannot afford their own apartment. Actually it is rare. You usually have to move in with multiple people to afford rent! Try craigslist! People need roommates all the time in NYC so that it is more affordable to live out there.
I like it okay but I guess because I go so often it is not a big deal to me, I do like all the things there are to do there tho. Soho is a shopping heaven if you have money anyway lol...

A corned beef sandwich at Carnegie Deli or one of the nearby competitors is $20 - it's also about 8" thick with slice meat and 2 slices of bread - nothing else.
Same price for locals or tourists. So maybe the locals don't eat there?

It's a busy city, we (new yorkers) don't have time to stop on the street and chat/stare at buildings or people who work in movies/TV to make their living.
Most families have both parents working to afford the high prices and single people normally share rooms/rent to get by.

DoH, local don't eat at the Carnegie Deli. It's a tourist trap. Locals don't go to Times Square and eat at Ruby Foo's either.
If you want a sandwich go to Katz's.

I dont live in NY, sorry.. i just wanted to mention that i too wonder how people can live there, when $1000 is considered cheap for rent. I know that they say that most of the people that live there would never live anywhere else. But for me, give me the country.. haha..

i don't know who told you all sandwiches are $20. that's for tourist. you have to know where to go. you can eat very well and cheaply if you go to the right places. yes, there is also finer dining and price fixe in the theatre district.
