I am about to get a Golden/Lab mix puppy. I would like to find a good puppy food that does not contain a lot of grains. Do you have any suggestions?
I really want to provide the puppy with the best food I can get. If you could tell me what you feed yours and why, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Innova Evo, Wysong, Instinct, Wellness Core, Merrick, Nature's Variety Raw Pellets, Orijen, and Timberwolf OceanBlue are all the grainfree high quality foods I can think of at the moment.

It's great that you want to give the best food you can and are willing to learn. More people should be like that

There are quite a few great foods out there, some are Evo, Canidae, Innova and California Natural. Pet stores would be the best place to get higher quality food. You want to look at the ingredients, if it shows meat by products stay away from it and also stay away from foods that have corn a lot of dogs are alergic to corn. The less grains and other ingredients the better. Of course the best diet you can give is a raw diet.

Innova for puppies (large breed formula). Because EVO isn't always recommended for puppies, and large breed formula because the regular Innova puppy formula causes diarrhea in my puppy.

Your holistic pet store has a good selection of other high quality/low or no grain kibbles also.

I use Blue Buffalo. It is human grade, holistic, and has a limited source of suppliers for their ingredients (none from China!) and they are the only dog food company that cold forms their vitamins/supplements separate from the kibble that is baked at a high temperature (and thus would cook out a major portion of the potency!) and then add these vitamin pills called LifeSource Bits to the kibble in the package.
I use the Adult Chicken and Rice formula, but they have a variety of formulas depending on the dogs age and needs.

I personally favor Merrick Puppy Plate kibble and canned. An all-around awesome, complete puppy formula that looks and smells great to both human and dog.

If you really want the best food for your dog, and money is not an issue, try Merrick and your dog will LOVE it!!

In fact, Merrick canned and kibble products are good for life and all of the canned varieties are awesome!

Timberwolf Organics is a great dog food company and they have a grain free formula (their Ocean Blue formula).

Canidae and Innova are good foods as well.

Dogs eat the exact same things we do for a good diet and they do need grains.
We make our own. Roasted chicken, boned out and chopped up., with mixed veggies added, canned, or frozen or fresh raw (carrots, green beans, peas, potatoesand others) some wild brown rice (cooked) and a cup of oats (not instant- and uncooked) We all a broken capsule of Omega 3 every 2 or 3 days and we add nutritional supplement Juice Plus+ for dogs every meal. They each get 1 piece of raw chicken (usually a breast or thigh) each week. They love it. This is enough bulk and grain to keep their digestion happy, enough nutrition to keep the skin and body cells happy and also keep the flea off.
HAPPY DOGS.

So read labels. and get you a good blend of good foods. Keep in mind that Vets get kickbacks from dog food companies to push their brands. And the most expensive is not necessarily the best.

I think most name brand dog foods make a quality puppy food but I lean toward iams because I worked for a Rendering plant that supplied protein for iams and they would turn down a whole 25 ton load if they found one bug in the dump door on the trailer or if you did not have a slip saying that the trailer was washed out before loading have fun labs are great and never too tired to play...

I just got two puppies of my own and went to the nearest Petco to get some puppy food for them. I normally fed them Natural Balance which is supposed to be very good, but the manager there told me that the puppy food at Costco is the best. She feeds them to her own dogs, instead of getting something from her own Petco store! It has no soy, wheat, corn, or meat-by-products which are all things you should avoid when buying any type of dog food. It is a yellow 20 lbs. bag and only costs $10 whereas I used to buy a 5 lbs. bag of Natural Balance for the same price. This comes to show that the most expensive is not always the best. I hope this helps! Good luck!
