Word usually has margins all around the outside of the page. You can adjust them, but it's not usually a good idea to totally eliminate them, especially the top and bottom ones. To adjust them:

1. Click on the File->Page Setup menu item.
2. Click the Margins tab.
3. Adjust the four margins.
4. If you want to make the new ones the default for future documents, click the Default button.
5. When you're done, click OK.

Hope that helps.

To quickly get to the top of a file, click Control+Home.

To find out the built-in default margins on your printer, open a blank, new Word document.
click File
cl Page Setup
set all margins to 0
click o.k.
you will get a message that margins are set outside the printable area, asking if you want them fixed
click Yes
The resulting margins are default.
Change as you wish - above the default.
