It's a jewish custom, and I'm not sure why. I think it has someting to do with not being concerning with vanity while in mourning.

I am spanish. When my father passed on my mother stopped all the clocks at the time of his death. Also all the mirrors were covered . This is to prevent the spirit from being trapped into the house. Another custom is to annoint the person's feet with oil or dirt for a safe journey into their next life.

It is a custom in the Jewish faith (especially the Orthodox and Hasidim) to cover mirrors after someone dies, because you are not supposed to be concerned with your own vanity when you're in mourning.

The point is that family members can grieve without worrying about their streaked faces and puffy eyes. It makes the family more comfortable expressing their grief together.
"I believe we get this from the Jews"... Just curious, do other people besides Jews do this? I've never heard of the practice outside of Judaism.
