I have a 30 page word document (MS Word 2003). There is a cover page on the 1st page and a table of contents on the second. I would like page numbers to start on the 3rd page. In other words, the 3rd page would have "Page 1" in the footnotes, 4th would have "Page 2" in the footnotes, etc. Could someone please help with this??

Here's how:

1. At the top of the first page you want numbered, click the Insert->Break menu item.
2. Insert a Next Page type section break.
3. Move the cursor down a few lines so it's in the new section you just created..
4. Click on the View->Headers and Footers menu item. You should now see and be able to edit the section's header.
5. One of the icons on the Headers toolbar that pops up, probably the fifth from the right, will say "Same as Previous" when you hover the cursor over it. Click it to disconnect the header from the previous one.
6. The one to its right will say "Switch between Header and Footer" Click it.
7. You're now in the footer. Repeat step 5.
8. A third icon, probably the one to the right of the Switch one, will say "Move to Previous" Click it. You've now moved to the footer of the first section.
9. If there's a page number in the header or footer for this section, delete it.
10. Close the toolbar.
11. Go into the second section.
12. Click on the Insert->Page Numbers menu item.
13. Click on the Format button.
14. Click Start At. A 1 should show up in the list box adjacent to it.
15. Click OK.
16. Click OK to actually insert the page number.

That should do it. What you now have is two sections. Both sections have headers and footers, but the page number will appear only in the second section.

At the end of page 2, click Insert, Break, Next page.
Look at the status bar.
If you click on page 1 or two, you will see Section 1.
If you click on page 3, you will see Section 2.
Go to the top of file
click View, Header/Footer
-----you will get the Header/Footer toolbar
-----click the "switch between header/footer" button
-----you are now in the footer of Section 1
-----don't type anything in Section 1 - click the "show next" button
-----you are in section 2
-----click the "same as previous" button to turn it off
-----click the button that looks like the "pound" sign for the page number
-----click the "format page number" button -looks like a smaller pound sign
-----click in the circle for "start at" and be sure 1 is in it
Pages 1 and 2 will not be numbered
Page 3 will be numbered 1

Please a section break between the second and third page. Then insert the page number into the thrid page, and set it to begin with "1". Because the pages before the section break have no "numbers", they will not be used when calculating footnotes, etc.
