In 1Corinthians 14: 34-35, St. Paul says:

"Let women be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but let them be in subjection, just as the Law says. If they want to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."

Why did Saint Paul say this?

1C 14:34 . Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

Meta-Physically Paul represents the word of Truth transforming consciousness. 'Women' represent emotive aspects of our character, the churches are the congregation of Spiritual thoughts building Faith in consciousness. The 'women' - that is, the emotions must be mastered - that is, subject to Spiritual Discipline.

Because the church he was writting to had problems with gossiping. The church Paul was writting to was not a church like today, but rather a small group of people that would have been in someone's house. Paul was reffering to a particular group of women who were detracting from the event.
When reading Paul's letters, it is important to understand that first and foremost, these were simply letters. Paul's saying that the women should be silent was a polite refference to a particular woman who he preffered not to name.
