Unless this effort is nonprofit in the sense of being registered with all appropriate state and federal offices as a nonprofit organization, with an official name, a board of directors, a physical address, and a Form-990 available for review, you cannot describe this legally as a "nonprofit" and, therefore, you are not going to be able to seek donations -- and any income you receive to help with the site will be subject to tax.

If you are, indeed, a formal, registered nonprofit, then talk to the marketing staff or board of directors about the expenses, presenting a list of expenditures, and see if there is money in the budget for this effort, as well as how the effort can be integrated into the organization's other marketing efforts. The organization will also want to count your money spent so far as a donation to the organization (and may require you, in the future, to seek their approval first before spending such).

If this is an individual effort -- you, being a nice person, wanting to create a web site to help others -- then the best you can hope for is contacting family and friends to give you money for the site, asking them to pay for web hosting, for instance. But you aren't going to receive donations/grants for such, as an individual.

Actually, if you go to the United Way sites, they have a list of ll services available to people including food banks, locatioons where food is distributed with the names and addresses, shelter information including low income. meals of wheels, Legal , clothing, low income energy assistance program, and any other service that low income people may need, it is quite extensive!

Try writing for grants trough the government, state and county
make a plan to estimate how much you would need to run this organization.

Bear in mind, that United Way also funds these agencies too, the rest of the money is from the charities themselves who write for grants and the donor dollar. In someway all these chairitable organizations work hand in hand with each other to cover any client need. We not want duplication of services because that would render one agency duplicating anothers efforts where the money could be spread in another way so that all services that are needed are covered.
