Especially with an older dog you should try to stick to the same sounding type of name. For instance Ellie ends in an "E" sound so try Daisy, or Cookie etc. I have a 7yr old Dashchund also, her name is Baby. Really cute and she's pretty spoiled - it fits her perfectly!

dont you think that since she is 7 it will be very confusing for her to be completely renamed? How about using a form of Ellie that your sister doesn't use as her name or nick name? Either shorten it to El or lengthen it to Include Ellie - like Ellie Girl?

My Dachshund is named "Peanuts" because she was palm sized when I first got her, she is now 9 years old. I like the name Pepperoni for a Dachshund, especially a red one haha!

Try to name her something that sounds like Ellie since she probably already knows her name- Nellie maybe?

maybe just let your 4 year old name her? She can pick a name that's easy to say then.

Kids can come up with odd, but cute names.

how about shelly, or something closly sounding like her name now, its hard to retrain an older dog to rspond to a totally new name!
