The job is in NYC, and when asked I gave the salary requirment of $45,000, probably what I would require in my hometown but not the big apple. They want to bring me in for an interview but I don't think I could live off that salary there, am I stuck?

I would be honest and, in the interview, once salary is discussed, I'd say something like:

"When I first determined my salary requirements, I wasn't aware of just how much higher the cost of living is here in NY. Now that I see first hand the cost of living, I would be much more comfortable in the low to mid $50K range."

May mention it. I go with the flow. Sometimes a person real serious. Sometimes they enjoy Humor. But, most will respect honesty. (I use $50,000 in the example)
When the discussion comes up about salary, may say; "Well, the $45,000 was before I had to buy gas here. But, for $50,000 I think I can have a buddy deliver it from home". (That Humor).
OR; I sorry, but, I feel I under-estimated my salary requirement and after researching the area would need $50,000 to start, sorry for misleading you on that as it was not my intention. (That Serious).
Maybe you see what I say, and you have to go with the situation how you approach this.
