"Should I give up attending class?"
"Should I give up bathing, showering, and washing?"
"Should I give up breathing?"
Your priest is a wise and kind man, and shook his head because he doesn't like to think of you harming yourself by foolishly giving up something necessary and important.

Did you seriously ask the priest if you could give up Catholicism? If you did, what do you expect? That was about as insulting as it gets! Shame on you! In fact, I think the priest showed great patience and suffering in light of your blatant rudeness.

He gave you an answer, where I come from shaking the head means “no.”
Besides, giving up Catholicism, would be like giving up your life (suicide.)

Yes!
But, give up the 'Roman' aspect and keep the Universal aspect of 'Catholicism' and you will do well.
