What is a good way to excuse yourself from a conversation while at a party?

Question

I'm going to my girlfriend's company holiday party. I've never met anybody there so I don't want to talk to people for more than 5 minutes at time.

Anybody know some effective yet polite ways to excuse myself from conversations?

I want to keep conversations 5-7 minutes not because I want to be rude or I'm dreading the party.

I just want to keep the conversations shallow so it's about weather/sport/family, not about religion/politicts.

Hmm, there are a couple good ones. Bathroom, saying you just remembered you have to call someone, or saying excuse me for a moment while I go get some fresh air. But don't get out of too many conversations, otherwise people won't like you for not listening.

You are already setting yourself up not to want to talk to anyone, you may just meet someone you will want to have a lengthy discussion with.

You can always go to the restroom. You could also ask someone to call you at different intervals (like you've got a sick child/parent to check up on) or have it be work related. You could also start to sneeze and pretend allergies and excuse yourself.

Relax pal, and check out her co-workers. If the conversation gets too long, just say. "Excuse me, Please, but I just can't hold it in anymore. I have to go!
You just can't use it too many times at a party.
Give the party a chance! Do it for your girlfriend!
