The purpose of life is to continue.
The method of continuing is called evolution which contains such diverse elements as mutation, genetic drift, differential reproductive success, and of course, the pruning shears of natural selection.
If you mean, what is the point of HUMAN life, then I suspect we are in the unique or nearly unique position of creating our own meaning, since our intelligence (if not the full application thereof) is greater than almost all other animals.

Biologically speaking, the point of life is to reproduce and to keep your gene line going. As far as we are concerned, the point of life is what ever you want to make of it.

Life is but a walking shadow , a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more . It is a tale , told by an idiot , full of sound and fury but signifying nothing . Wm. Shakespeare .

Everybody's life is different.
You need to find out what's important to you, and what you want your life to be about.
Oh- sometimes this takes most of a lifetime to figure out.
(enjoy the ride)

It doesn't have one.
And 42 isn't the answer either. 42 is the answer to the great question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
No one knows what the actual question is that 42 answers though.

You were made by God, and for God, and until we understand that, life will never make sense. It is only in God that we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance, and our destiny. Every other path leads to a dead end. It took me awhile to realize this, and I have never been more happier, and satisfied with life. :)
