It was once said, and I have heard this myself, that if the telphone rang when I was taking a bath, my excuse for not answering would be, 'I was taking a bath, when the telephone rang.' I lived in Australia for two years. Bewteen 1974 and 1976 I was in Australia. I have lived in Australia. At that time I was living in Australia. I'm going to Austalia. Present, Future, Imperfect, Present Perfect, Past, Past Perfect Sorry, I'm only a language teacher - work it out for yourself. Hey! I found it! This gives tense of the verb in the main clause and tense of the verb in the subordinate clause. Main Clause Sub Clause Present He thinks that it will rain Future simple Past He thought that it would rain Conditional Present He sees that he has made a mistake Pres. Perf Past He saw that he had made a mistake Past Perf. Pres.Perf He has done all that is necessary Present Past Perf He had done all that was necessary Past Present He says that he is going to eat it Pres. cont. Past He said that he was going to eat it Past cont. You are probably more confused now than before.
