Hey everytone,
I have a question? I have book a Wedding reception so I can get married on May 30, 2009. However, me and my fiance...more him...want to do it sooner. He thinks the wedding is just too far away. He thought of a December wedding in 2008...maybe on a Friday or Sunday before Christmas. The rates are cheaper on a Friday or Sunday and we need to save since were thinking of pushing the wedding sooner. Or we were thinking of a Valentine Wedding in 2009. What do you all think. I was thinking of a winter wedding before Christmas...but won't my wedding be overshadowed by the holiday??

I have to choose between a December 08 wedding on a Sunday at The Palace on Somerset Park (In New Jersey) or a Spring 09 Wedding at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden (In Brooklyn) on a Saturday. Both are beautiful to me.

The Brooklyn site is called The Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

Christmas time people are really rushed to get done with shopping, cooking, planning, etc. Plus, some might go out of town and not be able to make it.
Personally, I think a Valentine's Wedding is not for me....I wouldn't want to share my day with millions of other people who choose that day to get hitched.
If you can't wait till May and don't want to get overshadowed by Christmas (plus, it's already Dec 3! That's soon!) then why not get married in January?
A new start for a new year?
Congrats and good luck :)

When you have a wedding that close to Christmas, it may be very difficult for some of your guests to come due to holiday plans. If you're ok with that, or if your friends and family live nearby, then go for it. You're definitely correct about rates being lower on Friday and Sunday. Rates are also lower in the winter than in the spring or summer. That said, if you have lots of friends and family you want to attend, but who don't live nearby, the Christmas wedding may not be a good idea.
As far as Valentine's Day: some rates will be much higher on account of the marketing campaign.. excuse me, holiday. For instance, the price of flowers will double or even triple. around Valentine's Day. Besides, that's kind of cliche. My wedding is February 2, 2008 and I just found out about the whole flower price-gouging ordeal. The florists are charged more for flowers, and so they pass along those costs to the client. However our wedding is a couple of weeks before Valentine's Day, so we're not really feeling the price increase.
My suggestion would be to pick a date in January or early February. It's long enough after Christmas that you won't have to compete with everyone else's holiday plans, and you won't feel the venue and flower crunch of Valentine's Day.

I think the Christmas wedding sounds great. Just be sure to to send out Save the Dates to all of your guests for either date. Since it's a busy season you will want to give them a heads up well before your official invitations go out so they can adjust their plans if necessary. If you can get your reception hall cheaper then i say go for it. I don't think it would be to overshadowed by the holiday as you are not planning on getting married on Christmas day. Venues tend to be a little cheaper as it is not as popular time for weddings then the spring-summer months and early fall. On the other hand Valentines day is an extremely popular day for weddings and engagements. Your wedding location may cost more because of the popularity, flowers will definitely cost more just because they are a big part of Valentines Day. In this case you will be overshadowed by the holiday. Guests may or may not attend as they may have personal plans of their own and budget wise you may be looking at some extra expense.

I chose December 5, 2008 for my fiance and our's wedding date. It's a Friday night in December. Planning a December wedding is so much fun. There are so many things to choose from. I think that if you choose a date early in the month that the wedding won't be overshadowed by Christamas. If you do plan to have it in December, book everything early though so you can beat out those people booking things for Christmas parties!

Go with the Winter wedding. You may find that a Valentine's Day wedding is WAY expensive because of Valentine's Day being attached to it.
I in no way think your wedding will be overshadowed at all by the holidays...if anything the holidays will enhance your wedding. Since places are decorated for the holidays anyway, you'll find that many places are beautiful and don't need any other adornments from you which will save you money.

if you are going to do a small intimate wedding with just immediate family christmas would be wonderful. the season is filled with romance and excitement and would add to your wedding.
however, if you want a big wedding keep in mind people will have so many other expenses, committments, parties, etc. that your wedding may not be as well attended as you would hope. and if people have to travel much at all to get to your wedding they will likely send their regrets and not attend. it doesn't mean they don't care about you and love you, its just bad timing.
having said all that i must admit in our little corner of the world everyone and their uncle get married on feb.14th and it is so overdone.
why not have an autumn 2008 wedding? the colours are gorgeous, the timing is good, weather is generally much better than spring and it will be easier for your guests than christmas would. or you could have an easter wedding - how pretty would that be? all the fresh spring flowers in full bloom!
whatever your choice, happy wedding!

I was a Dec 5th wedding. It was great for so many reasons that I will list
1. The holidays begin at Thanksgiving, and there is a magic at the holidays that cant be recreated any other time of year. Everyone is in good moods, happy and excited.
2. Its a HUGE money saver because everything is pretty much decorated FOR you. I spent $600 for my wedding flowers because all I really needed was bouquets and boutineers, my BF who was married in June spent over $10K because NOTHING was decorated.
3.If you plan early enough in the season (meaning not too close to Christmas) and get the word out, you wont have any problems with people attending, people will reserve your day as a day for no holiday parties because they have a wedding to go to.
4.You get to wear a pretty dress and you wont be HOT in it because its cold outside. In June youwould be sweating to death with all the extra fabric hanging off you.
Oh I could go on and on.
Feb 14th will be expensive, BTW, Valentines day is one of the most expensive flower days of the year. If you choose this day you will be spending alot more on flowers than you probably want. Also, as someone else above said, you wont have the day to yourself, so many people marry on V-day, you will just be another one of them.
I'd go for the Dec. Your wedding wont be overshadowed by the holiday if you do it earlier rather than closer to the 25th.
Good luck with your decision!

I know there are a lot of answers but I had another that I think would be really neat... How about a New Year's wedding??? You could get married on New year's eve and celebrate into the new year, or have your rehearsal and then a big party on new year's eve night and then get married the 1st or 2nd?
I just love the idea of merging the big new year's celebration with a wedding - your colors could be silver and white!

First of all dont ruch look into how much it will cost to change your date. As for december or febuary?
December is cheaper and more dates are open when as febuary cost double and fewwer days are open. there is a good chance you will not get the 14 unless you move now and even than it is not likely.
food for thought if you do december you could buy things on sell this year after christmas thus saving more money
