Receptionist positions tend to be on the low end of the pay scale. Guys could certainly do the job but probably not for the low pay.
Once upon a time, most secretaries were male. When women started filling most of these clerical positions, the pay scale dropped.

I believe guys can do the job too. I have dealt with a couple of law firms who had guys who answered the phones and did paralegal work. I don't see why they can't.

A professor I know - who works in Germany has a male assistant.
I work with several.
Not just for girls.
