If you are traveling by air, you need your passport now.

If you are traveling by car, you only need government i.d. (like a driver's license).

Passports are going to be required sometime in the summer of 2008. Starting January 1, 2008, you will need government i.d. plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

If you are flying you need one now.

If you are driving, the date has been postponed until "as soon as" the Summer of 2008. If you read any that say January, they haven't updated - that was postponed.
