I have heard so many people say that the 60gb ps2 is fully compatible with ps2 games. Does that mean I could go to a shop and buy a new ps2 game that just came out and it would work?

Yes, the 60GB PS3 is nearly fully backward compatible with PS2 and PS1 games, so you can play any PS2 game on it, it doesn't matter if the game comes out a year from now, the PS3 will be able to play it.

In short, yes. You could go and shop for new PS2 games and they would work on your 60GB PS3. You can also save game data on your PS3 without a memory card.

In all likelihood it will work, but it is always best to refer to the compatibility list from Sony linked below. Enter the game, and it will tell you which models it will work with, plus any possible issues that may arise during game play.
