I often get the urge to sleep after my lectures end (12:30PM every day) if I stay up very late the night before. I recall someone telling me that sleep is a valid reason for missing Salah, which I have my doubts about.

If one was to miss Salah for the purpose of sleep, are we allowed to make it up in Qada prayer?

There is no excuse for missing salah, at all. Yes, it is sunnah to sleep in the afternoon. However, the prophet used to finish praying the Nafila prayers, and the Fard of course, then take a nap (or Qayloolah). So, wait until it's time to pray, then pray, then take a nap. But, again, don't miss Asr. Otherwise, avoid staying up late to not miss your Salah. May Allah help us please Him and guide us to what's better for our Akhirah.

No, No way you can do that. You have to set up something. Qada prayer is allowed only when you have missed the prayer when you had no chance of offering a prayer and you were trying to offer it but couldn't do it. You are to offer prayer even if you are driving. park your car and offer FARZ salah atleast. Sleep, I know sometimes timings really makes a huge difference specially for the students, when they have to wake up for the Fajer prayer and there remains still about 4 hours to leave for the college.

Allah will like this act, urge of yours to offer prayers on Time.

Prophet Mohummad said that it is best to nap after dhur but before asr.

My brother is studying to become an Aalim and he told me it's sunnah to sleep in the afternoon, this is called Qaylula. HOWEVER... I don't know about if it's okay for you to miss your salah.

He told me, it's sunnah to sleep after Zuhr prayer, and before Asr prayer.

Your best bet is to talk to an Imam at a mosque.
