There are a lot of people here who are not interested in objectively scrutinizing their own beliefs/religion.

Are you one of them?

Take for example this guy who is afraid of skeptic's websites: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aqo_YIxzemgs5OzwxO03_pzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071203091549AAAueWS&show=7#profile-info-OrFglAtjaa

And just the other day I asked if ANYTHING could rock your faith - so many people said "no"... I thought WOW, so you're admitting that your beliefs are not based on evidence, and interpretation of evidence. Isn't it scary how some people think (or don't)

plastik punk: he may have been right about a single website, but it doesn't make sense to be skeptical of skeptics.

Let's say Christianity is your truth. When you reach out to say Muslims - do you want them to have the mindset that skeptics of Islam (websites and all) are not trustworthy, simply because they are skeptical, or have an "agenda"?

It's hard for all humans to tell the difference. And yes, that applies to non-believers too.

I have experienced Gods Truth setting me free from soo much wrong thinking already. So? My truth for years can be somewhat wrong. And with the deception is bondage. The Truth of God does set us free. So? I will choose Gods Truth any time, even if it is hard to receive at first. Sometimes the truth hurts.

Basically, I just want to know the truth. I don't care if I am wrong here or there. Just give me the truth. I have the Holy Spirit to let me know if someone elses truth isn't Gods Truth.

My "truth" comes from the Buddha's expectations that we do NOT take anything he said on faith, but to chew it over, question the answers, "test it like gold", however you want to put it. In any of the ways the expectation is that you examine yourself what was said and find if it makes logical sense to you or not.

Frankly, nobody's been able to disprove the logic of the Buddha's teachings yet... not really, and I certainly haven't been able to, but see... that's what works for me. What works for others might be vastly different.

Well my truth and the truth are synonymous. And the example you used is not the best one. He actually knows what he is talking about. Sometimes anyway.

*edit* I get what you are saying. And it is good to always research both sides of an argument.

The bible encourages human intellection. St. Paul exhorts christians to: "Test all things and hold fast to that which is good" 1 Thessalonians 5:21. God, being the author of reason, cannot have any aversion whatsoever to human intellectual endeavor.

However, one must distinguish between what one is able to know through reason, logic, science, etc. and what is revealed to us. Revelation about God has been revealed to us because the human intellect is limited in scope. Therefore God came down to us, we whom could not approach God by reason alone. Reason has its place even to ascertain God's existence (unmoved mover argument, metaphysics, and various other reasons to believe in God), therefore it is not completely futile in that attempt, but God provided a clear revelation so that all may be saved, the very intelligent and the very simple minded. Beyond revelation he actually humbled himself so as to become as one of us, for love of us, that is what we christians believe. He reveals to us His nature and love, some attributes of which reason alone cannot attain.

Secondly, there cannot nor will there ever be, scientific evidence for the existence of God, in the same way that there is scientific evidence for the existence of cats and stars and cows and men, etc. In order to obtain that, God must exist in this universe, be observable and be able to be quantified. But then such a being would not be God, whom is said to exist outside of this universe and outside of time and MUST necessarily (via logic) exist this way if He was the true cause of this universe. The most one may be able to ascertain about God from science, is I think, indirect evidence. That this universe exists at all, with all of its variety and its utter beauty could all attest to God.

Science tells us what agents operate in nature (or the universe), not what, if any, operate outside of it.

Thirdly, philosphically speaking there are reasons to believe in God, but they are not necessarily scientific. The metaphysical unmoved mover argument is one of the best I have encountered, but there is also arguments from design, conscience, existence of the soul and a multiplicity of others, which could almost go on without ceasing. The real issue here is not that there is no reason at all to believe in a God, but that for materialists any reason which is not de facto, empirical, does not qualify from the outset. The question at the source of all of this is for me: Why must all acceptable or true knowledge necessarily be scientific/empirical? In philosophy, there are many forms of knowledge: metaphysical, logical, empirical, epistemic, poetic, etc. Some of these deal directly with the issue of God's existence and are rather compelling reasons.

The Bible is both my truth and The Truth. We do listen to anti-religion viewpoints but don't believe they're factual. That's all.

I am interested in THE TRUTH.
God has shown Himself to me. He has shown me the Bible is true. I think that's evidence.
So why would I believe you over God Himself?
