Pull over to a safe location out of traffic. Open all your windows, stop the car and put the keys on the roof. Turn on the lights and keep you hands on the wheel in plain sight. Stay calm, follow instructions and be respectul and it will be over soon.

There are a number of things you can do to make the process as painless as possible:
1. During the entire process, remain polite and do not argue with the officer.
2. After you come to a complete stop, turn off your car engine. Some people suggest placing your keys on the roof, however I think that is a bit much. Either leave them in the ignition or place them on the seat next to you or on the center console.
3. If it is dark, switch on your dome light.
4. Roll down the driver’s side window. If the officer approaches the passenger window and you have electric windows, roll it down. If you have manual windows, do not lean across the seat to roll down the window until the officer can see you. Move slowly as you do so, so that the purpose of your movements is obvious.
5. Keep your hands where they can be seen. Do not reach for paperwork and your driver’s license before the officer can see and asks. I also inform the officer where I am reaching before I do so. IE He says, "May I see your license, registration and proof of insurance?". I say "Of course, my license is in my back pocket" and then I get my wallet. "My registration and proof of insurance are in the center console" and then I gather those documents. Of course, slow purposeful movements anytime you reach for anything.
NOTE: If you have a gun (permitted or not) declare it to the officer immediately in a non-threatening manner. As an example, when he asks for your registration and you know there is a gun in the glove box tell him "I would be happy to show you my registration, however there is a gun in the glove box on top of it." He will ask you to step out of the vehicle and retrieve the documents. If you have the appropriate permits (and there is no other reason for arrest such as an outstanding warrant) you will be on your way once the process is complete. Reaching in the glove box where there is a gun could get you shot.
6. While the officer is back at his car running your license and registration, sit still with your hands on the steering wheel, again where they can been seen.
7. I say thank you to the officer when he asks if I have any questions.
Remember, he is just doing his job. If you are polite to him, he will be more so to you.

I pull as far over as possible, get my registration and license out, turn my car off, put my hands on the wheel and if at night, have my dome light on. And of course, I have to inform him/her that there is a weapon in the vehicle.

I place my hands on the steering wheel and wait for the officer to come to the window. At night, I turn on the dome light first. Be pleasant. Arguing will not get you out of a ticket if the officer is going to write one. It may even make him go further to find more violations.

You should get out your driver's license, and your registration form, then you should obey everything the officer tells you to do. Remember to be respectful, kind, and do not use any sarcasm: remember, he has a gun.

Sit and wait. Be polite and do as they ask. I have nothing to worry about unless I did something wrong. Cops are people too. Just make their job as easy as possible and they will be as nice to you as they can be,
