Of course! Pick a ring you like, it doesn't have to be traditional. Just be aware that some people won't immediately recognize it as an engagement ring but as long you and your fiance know what it means, then who cares?

Absolutely!
My primarily non-diamond engagement ring is being put together by a jeweler. I am getting an aquamarine with diamond side-stones (Fiance insisted on having some diamonds on the ring).
To comment on Baby's statement. I am being surprised (All I know is the stone, I don't know when I'll get it, what shape he ultimately decided on, etc). I told my fiance I'd be scared to death to wear an engagement ring that is 1/2 the price of my car and I think most men would appreciate knowing that. Also, I prefer colored stones to diamonds so when the subject came up I was glad to tell my guy what I liked. I didn't insist on one stone or another, I gave him a few options and he chose.
I think its another thing when a woman says "I won't say yes unless it is at least x number of carats or more than x price".

Of course it is! Just believe that whatever he chooses for you will be beautiful and special because HE chose it! Can be diamond, there are lovely cz rings, other gemstones, etc.
My husband chose diamonds, and he made a lovely choice. However, recently I bought myself a dress ring - a pink topaz with diamond shoulder stones - and think it would make a lovely engagement ring!

You can pick any ring you want. Diamonds are very expensive and you can get a stone in any setting that looks like an enagement ring and of couse it is OK to have a ring that is not a diamond diamonds are very expensive and in my opinion WAY TOO overrated. Best wishes to you e4g

Of course it is! Your engagement ring can be anything you want it to be. A diamond is traditional, but now lots of people are going for colored stones and other less traditional things. As long as it means something to you, anything goes.

Of course it's okay. Have whatever you want. People won't recognise that you're engaged unless you tell them, so as long as you're okay with that, I'd get whatever I wanted. Some people have commented whether the guy should choose as it is, essentially a gift from your future husband and I completely understand and respect that but my husband surprised me many years ago with a ring and while I wouldn't change it for the world, it does remain in my jewellery box as I don't wear it often because it's not really my style, plus it's gold and I wear silver/white gold/platinum. My husband says if he was to change anything, he would get me to choose my ring because he is disappointed when I don't wear it.

Honestly, if you are wearing the ring, I think you should have a say so in it..... you will be wearing it for the rest of your life, right?? Why get something you don't like?? But I agree, the man should be able to surprise you.... most men feel good when they get to do something for their (hopefully) fiance!! Let him have his fun but you can hint around, like, when you walk in mall and 'suddenly' notice you are walking past the ring aisle, make a comment, "Oh I love the red one, I want just like that" or "I think colored rings are prettier than diamonds" If he is smart, he will take the hint..... but if he still chooses a ring you don't like, BE HONEST, it is easier to be honest from the start and then make an exchange!!

But just, Hint around but still let the man have fun!!!

Of course it is. I almost picked out a beautiful emerald cut ruby, set in white gold flanked by diamonds.....but my fiance wanted something more traditional and as he was paying......we went with white diamonds.
Loads of women are choosing gemstone engagement rings these days. Be happy with your choice and show it off accordingly.

Sure it is! You dont even have to have a ring, you could have a bracelette or necklace if you want.
The USA is really the only country that usues the diamond, in most European countries its almost always a gemstone of some sort.
There is no right or wrong, its you personal choice!

Best of luck!
