HD Ready means that the TV can be used as an HD monitor, as long as you have a digital HD tuner to select and demodulate the HD signals. And, to get the HD picture, you have to hook the tuner to your TV using the component video cables (red, blue, and green RCA cables).

This is as opposed to a full HD TV, which has its own digital tuner and HD demodulator.

Digital cable TV and satellite boxes contain digital tuners. So, you just hook the component video cables from the box to your TV, and off you go.

To pick up your local broadcasts, you'll need to buy a digital tuner (less than $100) to pick up and demodulate the signal. You then hook the component video cables from the tuner to your TV. You also might need a different antenna than you would use for regular TV broadcasts, depending on the signal strength in your area. These "HD antennas" are designed to efficiently pick up the frequency at which the HDTV signals are broadcast.

You will still need an HD OTA antenna to get those free HD broadcasts in your area.
