Anything that is praised, admired, desired, more than God, can be considered an idol, and the process of showing attention to these items is idolatry. The number one idol of most people is money. The second most worshiped item is anything that money can buy, such as houses, automobiles etc. Food can be an idol for some people. When you consider that your body is the temple of God, then you have to treat it with Godly respect and not over fill it, or abuse it.
Some people want to have large "temples", unfortunately, not for worship.

The essence of idolatry isn't found in bowing before golden statues - it's believing anything that is untrue or unworthy of God. I'd say that takes on a LOT of "forms" - given the average day on YA.
