Just say thank you for the return of your items and for their integrity to return it. (In the future, if you find something that could be returned, do it. That is the best way to thank someone, to return the favor. Or, help someone who is stuck by the side of the road.)

8 Thank-You Letter Tips:

*

Write clearly and concisely; this is no time to be longwinded or flowery.
*

Be sincere--most people can sense when you aren't being honest.
*

Stick to the point.
*

Write the thank-you letter as soon as possible after the event
*

Use quality paper. Handwrite personal letters, and use customized letterhead for business correspondence. E-mail may also be appropriate in less formal situations, especially if the addressee expresses a preference for it or if time constraints require it.
*

Proofread the letter before sending it: grammatical errors and typos are sloppy and unprofessional.
*

Be specific and include details from the event. Make your letter stand out (don't send a generic letter that could be to or from anyone).
*

Address your letter to a specific person, if possible

Just say how important your stuff is to you and how you appreciate that he took the time and effort to help out a stranger. It would be appropriate to give a reward as well I think. If there was a lot of cash in the wallet and it was all there, soemthing like 10% of that amount. If there wasn't much cash, then maybe a $25 reward.

Just say what you feel - you probably never expected to get your wallet back, are relieved and glad to have had it returned, and I would include something like an AmEx gift check or gift card from a national store as an additional "thank you". Oh, and yes, I agree you might want to get new cards, just in case.

firstly, are you on first name terms or have you always addressed him as Mr ...... If the latter, Dear Mr, ending with Yours sincerely, also if it is first name terms, also Yours sincerely. However, if you are going to address him as Dear Sir, the ending would be Yours faithfully. As you are writing on behalf of your department, it would be nice to start off the letter something like: "On behalf of all members of our Department, I would like to thank you for...." Not sure how involved the Director got involved in the actual running, but what I thought would be nice was that you showed the letter wasn't just expressing your views, but those of all your colleagues.

That is awesome!!! You definitely need a nice thank you note. I would totally pour my heart into it. Tell them how thankful you are, how impressed you are with their honesty. That you wish they were representative of society as a whole. How much trouble they saved you in canceling everything and replacing things. Tell them how wonderful they are.

Wow, thats awesome!! I'd still cancel the cards if I were you... but you could include a $20 bill and send a nice card saying how its nice to know there are still people who are trustworthy and honest and that you appreciate their effort to send it back very much.

Send a thank you card with your personal note such as "Thank you so much for taking the time to return my wallet. It's refreshing to find such honest people in today's world. As a token of my appreciation please find enclosed a gift card. Again, thanks so much." Enclose a $ 25.00 gift card such as visa ,mastercard or american express.
