You usually first become a SWAT (or EST or SRT, etc.) member and then when you gain the experience you can become eligible to tryout for a sniper slot if one opens up. (If you impress enough people and get the nod.) To become SWAT, most teams require at least three years law enforcement experience. The officer must be in excellent physical and mental condition. The officer is required to pass a psychological exam prior to being picked as a team member. Swat Team Officers are required to pass a battery of physical fitness tests each month and training is ongoing. As far as pay, you would probably start out at as much money as a regular patrol officer. They sometimes make less because they do not get as much over time or court time.

Most SWAT team members are chosen when there are openings. You need to be on the police force first. All the members are Marksmen. I don't know if their pay is any higher than any other officer since most are called in from regular patrol duties in an emergency.

Don't you mean sniper? All SWAT team members are marksmen. In the Marine Corps a marksman is someone that can hit the target. Personally I shot expert which is sniper material.
