Hospitals give you a souvenir birth certificate but its not legally accepted as proof of age or citizenship.

After the hospital, (unlesss you did it youself) process it, the papers will be filed with the NYC Office of Vital Records.

You can then get it by the Internet, phone, mail, fax or in-person. If you will pick up in person
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/visit.shtml

BTW, the IRS requires that all children over the age of one have a Social Security number to be claimed as an income tax deduction so don't forget as time rolls on.

Hope that helps,

Steve

You should be able to get it within six weeks from birth. Contact the hospital where the baby was born.
