I've seen this question more than once - and no one seems to point out the fact that the verse says "the love of money is the root of all kinds (sorts) of evil" - in other words, while greed and materialism is definately one source - this ain't the only root from which it grows.

Dear Brother Anil, it is not the money but the lust for money that is the root of evil in today’s times. My friend, if you go deeper into the concept you will discover that the selfish and materialistic side of humans has always been a cause of wars and other social evils.

Money by itself is definitely not the root of all evils. If it so, we should have all rich people who are definitely bad, and all poor people, who are certainly good. The root of evil is evil mind, which is a mind that was not moulded through childhood in spiritual and moral matters by parents or grand-parents. Hard earned money will never lead to evil, but that easy money which was flowing unwantedly into your pocket, is sure to lead to bad deeds and ultimately to irreversible evils. So morally or ethically earned money should be held and rest should be diverted to charity. Anyhow your thoughtful question needs appreciation.

Not at all!

It's your identification and greed for money (or any material thing or concept such as religion) is the root of all evil. In order to survive you need food, which comes from money, That why in scriptures four objectives have been highlighted -
1. Dharam (right action)
2. Artha (right living hood)
3. Kama (right desire)
4. Moksha (all the above automatically leads to Liberation)

It's unfortunate that people consider spiritualism as renunciation of material life, which is gross misconception.

No. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. It's not God's will for us to live in poverty, but it's ALSO not God's will for us to put making money before serving Him.
