I don't know what museum but it was relatively small, two floors with a reddish interior... full of Renaissance portraits. It was possibly the only landscape painting there and it was sort of... a rocky area, i think a waterfall and a stunning rainbow. It had a gorgeous contrast between the light and dark areas and i've been wondering about it for a year! Please help!

I think that the picture you are looking for is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery - it is a two-floor plan, quite small. See link: http://www.nationalgalleries.org/visit/page/2:298:3/
If this looks familiar to you - why don't you write to their public relations dept. and ask them to help you. The address is Portrait Gallery
1 Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1JD pginfo@nationalgalleries.org
Hope you are successful
