Why parents spend hundreds of dollars on their childs 1st, 2nd, 3rd birthdays? Or their 4th for that matter? Why spend all that money on a birthday party they aren't going to remember? I know a woman who spent hundreds on her kids 1st birthday and even hired a dj?!! Thoughts?

That's just the thing these women aren't rich they are single parents scrapping to make ends meet.

They are doing it for other people not the child. I think they are crazy to hire a dj for a one year old's birthday, but if that's what they want then it is their money. Can't imagine what they will do for the kid when they are older though...they will probably feel they have to keep outdoing the prior year's party.

I am with you on that one. The only answer I can come up with is that it is obviously more for the parents than it is for the kid. My baby is 5 months and we are not buying really anything for her for Xmas. We will wrap up a few things and let her tear paper off because at that age the tearing of paper is more exciting than the actual "gift".

I think that the extravagance (especially now more than ever) is just another way to show status to the parents' friends. The kids would be just as happy with a few balloons and some cake.

Heh, I have NO clue why... I didn't for my daughter's first or second.. nor will I for her third. I made my own cake for her, my mom got decorations and supplies at the dollar store. We had just family at the little party and she had a blast smearing her little cake ALL over the place!!! I don't see the point of all that nonsense... It's a waste of money! Money that can be spent on MUCH better things.

You really got it right when you consider the amount of money spent on early BDs. The parents don't realize how much they can't afford until later. They think they are building real memories. They are for themselves, but not for the baby. They are really proudof the idea that they have a little one and for some reason it is OK to go overboard.pp

i didnt and wont. those early birthdays for us were a few friends and family. we were military and not made of money. my son is 5 this year and he still doesnt want a big party.

to me the parents who do this are doing those big parties for them its all show. the child is overwhelmed and crying or asleep.
why waste the money and time

I think because that is your 1st and you want it to be great and dont think about the little things like will they remember. I think that you want everyone to enjoy it too. Its takes alot of parenting to get to the right place!
