The Nature vs Nurture issue is hotly debated. Some say a family is obese because of their genes, others say it's because they learned poor eating habits.

Obesity is more common in persons of lower socioeconomic status. Education probably plays a role.

Other factors: rationalization, denial, poor body image, depression, lack of self control, sedentary lifestyle, eating out frequently.

Medical: Polycystic ovarian syndrome, poorly controlled diabetes, rare genetic syndromes, cortisone derivatives and certain other medicines.

Not sure exactly what you are asking here but here is my 2cents. I have lost over a 100 lbs so I guess I know what I am talking about. I think my family genetics have something to do with my size and the way I ate. We are all heavy, we all love food, and we all use food in an unhealthy way. Yet I do think you can learn to have good eating habits and not use food as a way to make yourself feel good. Even though I eat better an d exercise now I still have a love for food that most don't understand. I find it almost impossible to stop after one cookie and practically hear them screaming at me to eat them all. So I have to stay away from those things that I have little control over. I hope I answered your question, although I fear I started some new ones LOL

comfort eating can cause obesity as well as genetic factors. Eating as a reward can contibute as well, i.e parents using food as a treat. Some people use food as a coping mechanism in life.
