my girlfriend loves this painting (I'm hoping she isn't psychotic), and I would like to get her a copy or a book about it for christmas; I think she said it is by freubel or something, but I am not sure - please help. Thankyou.

Yes, sounds like Mikhail Vrubel. He illustrated a poem by another Russian, Lermontov (sp?), called 'Demon', which was pretty controversial at the time. I believe it was actually banned from print at one stage. That'd be another avenue to explore - maybe you could get her a copy of this.
I wish my boyfriend was as thoughtful as you - I drop hint after hint about Magritte, and he never gets it!
