Because America is too PC, and stuck up. Let loose, women are allowed to go topless in Canada.

I'm in the UK and breatfeeding here is completely accepted. Lots of restaurants and cafes have signs saying "You are welcome to breastfeed here" and I have fed my babies all over the place - benches in a busy high street, restaurants, school gate, anywhere, anytime. No one takes any notice or cares. When used to feed a baby, a breast is not a sexual thing. There are far more disapproving stares when a mother bottlefeeds her baby, because it shows she is not a caring mother since breast is so much better for her baby's health.
And I'm laughing at all the answers saying "it's fine as long as she does it under a blanket." Blanket?!? I have never used a blanket! I have never seen anyone use a blanket when breastfeeding. You just hitch up your top and plug the baby in. Who wants to carry a blanket around with all of the other baby paraphernalia.
I think Americans still have a bit of a puritan complex, hence the reason this question pops up on R&S. As further evidence I would cite the word "titbit". Over here, where the word originated, it is "titbit". When it made it across the pond it got changed to "tidbit" because it was thought that American nerves and sensibilities couldn't handle a word containing "tit." Hilarious.

We Americans are weird and schizophrenic -- we are both wild perverts obsessed with sex, and frigid prudes terrified of it. There is little balance. We have so many strange hangups when it comes to the human body, and can't see past sex when confronted with any kind of nudity. So, when a woman whips out her boobie on the bus, and begins to nurse her child, all kinds of strange thoughts run through our heads;
nice boobs!
lucky kid!
can I have some of that?
Why am I staring? Look away, look away!
Why is she doing that in public?!?!
That's making me uncomfortable!
That's obscene! Someone should stop her!
So, because the American brain is so sexually dysfunctional, we don't even want to see a woman nurse her own baby in public. It is definitely something we need to get over!
But, consider that America started out as a group of theocratic colonies established by religious puritans, and Australia started out as a penal colony. You guys are bound to be a lot more laid back about this sort of thing than we are.

It doesn't offend me. I don't understand why we make such a huge deal out of nudity. Its just the human body, a natural thing. I think we have just oversexualized the human body. The nudity we see is often physically attractive people selling the sexual aspects of their bodies. We lose the idea that our bodies come in all shapes and sizes and have many purposes beyond sex. I saw a billboard in the Netherlands with a very pregnant semi nude woman having her husband rub cream on her stomach. The ad showed a very tender moment of parental bonding. Some of the others I was with though were all scandalized or grossed out by the pregnant female form. I think we are losing the richness of the depth and breadth of beauty beyond just sexuality. They had a nude day in Europe (Denmark I think?) and it was on the news. Thousands came and it was grandparents, mothers, children, etc... the whole range of human form made you realize beyond the automatic response to associate the nude form with sex or something taboo. I'm not saying its appropriate to go around naked everyday. I think extremes on either end are to be avoided.

There are some places where you just should not whip it out and begin to feed your child. Its not offensive, its more rude, like changing a diaper right out in the open.
There are some places where you cannot help but feed your child right out in the open and there is nothing wrong with that. Its when you could go into the other room where there is more privacy and choose not to there is a problem.

Christians don't have a problem with feeding hungry babies. My wife breast fed our baby in church. She just covered it with a blanket, like anyone else should do, and went on worshiping God. No big deal.

I do not think it is a religious problem at all. We are just too uptight in this country to accept that is a very natural way to feed and bond with a child. I have no problem with breastfeeding anywhere many studies have shown it is best for not only the child but the mother as well. We need to be more accepting of this action.

Oh my gosh i know!
It is so F'd up here that people will throw a stinker of a fit over a women FEEDING her baby!
People say it is disgusting - oh get over yourself!
I tried to breastfeed my 3 and went to a restaurant and was told i had to go to the BATHROOM!!!!
WOULD YOU EAT YOUR MEAL IN THE BATHROOM - I THINK NOT!
I've had friends b/f in parks and people have called the cops for indecent exposure even though they were using a blanket.
Some people are so bleeding pethetic makes me wanna go nuts!
In England it is acceptable (if anyone there even b/f anymore and i know it is acceptable in Aus. Here, you have too many busy bodies with too much time on their hands and they feel they should use it on harrassing mothers trying to feed their young!

Yea, well America seems to be a bit preoccupied with these things, which sort of just intesifies the whole thing about the naked human body.
