he might have worms, which make his butt itch, or he might have digleberries (little piece of poop stuck to the hairs around his butthole) that make his butt itch, or he might need to have his anal glands expressed. Either way, get him to a vet, where he can be either wormed or expressed, or they'll tell you to take him to the groomers, so he can get his little bum clippered.

There are several reasons why your dog may drag his bottom on the ground. Many people believe that worms cause this, but a more common cause is a problem with their anal glands. These are two little sacks just inside their bottom which produce a foul smelling substance, which is normally emptied when a motion passes out. Their only function seems to be to act as a scent gland.
In some dogs, the glands do not empty themselves. This is called "Impaction" and is common in small dogs {especially Cavaliers} where the design of their bottoms seems to predispose them to it! A period of loose motions can also cause it. The Impacted glands irritate and so the dog either drags their bottom or chews at it. The glands need to be emptied carefully by a Vet periodically. If it is frequently occurring, the anal glands can be removed surgically.
So, first worm your dog with a good wormer {that does both round and tapeworms} and ask your Vet to check his anal glands for Impaction. there could be a few hairs stuck irritating the area as well.

He is 5 months old........a young pup with a problem.
First, take him to the vet. Explain the "dragging bottom" to the Vet. They will take a fecal sample and test to see if he has worms. (Not an extremely expensive test).
IF he has worms, they will give you a medication to deworm him.
If he DOESN'T have worms, then his anal glands, (not his anus) are full and need to be expressed.
(Negative to what so many people seem to think, he isn't just cleaning his *** on your carpet.)
The anal glands (there are two), are what give each dog its "scent"...which is why you normally see dogs sniffing each others backsides when they meet.
These glands normally express each time the dog had a bowel movement, emitting a brown, smelly liquid each time the dog voids......(also why dogs insist on sniffing another dogs feces when they find it...as the scent stays upon it).
Maltese dogs are prone to problems with their glands...a normal problem that many vets see often. Take the dog to the vet. Your vet can express the glands, emptying them of the liquid quickly and without pain to your dog. (The liquid will continue to return...as its normal and part of the make up of ANY dog). Either ask the Vet to teach you how to express these glands, or pay him to have them check quarterly....your choice.
(Found on a maltese faq sheet online)
"Anal Glands: these are two glands found on either side of the anus under the tail also known as "scent glands" which is why you often see two dogs sniffing in that location when they meet, as it is manner of identification. These two glands will normally express a brown, smelly liquid on their own during defecation. They can also be expressed by muscular contraction when the dog is frightened or excited. Sometimes the glands are not naturally expressed and become full or cause irritation which will cause a dog to "scoot" along the ground. An owner, groomer or veterinarian can express these glands manually when required. In some cases the glands become impacted and infected which will require manually expressing the glands, sometimes under anesthetic and then treatment with an antibiotic. "
Check out this page for further information on maltese..(I couldn't find a page on maltese/shitzu mixes)

Good luck and understand that its a normal behavior, expressed in many dogs but more common in some than others.
PS. Dogs "lick" to clean themselves....dragging their hiney's not not their way of cleaning.

My dog has the same exact problem. Don't let people lead you to believe that your dog has worms. In most smaller dogs there anal glands get full and the need to be expressed. A liscensed vet or sometimes even a groomer can do it. Try to switch to a food like science diet that does not have so much filler. It allows the dog not to have to go to the bathroom quiet so often.

Look at his anus. You will see little about the size of a bb around it. They will probably be black. There are a couple of things you can do to solve the problem.
1. (this is the one I would do) take the dog to the vet and let them fix the problem.
2. (this is one where soft stomach people need to stop reading.) Give the dog a bath in warm water. Take your index finger and put it in the dogs anus and gently squeeze with your thumb the little sacks. This will alleviate the problem. Again, I would take the dog to the vet and have the techs handle the issue. Kinda gross, and it can be different for different animals. Since this dog is so young, I would opt to have the vet handle it.

this is very early for a dog to be exhbiting health problems..
this behavior is often associated with dogs who need their anal glands cleaned - but doesnt often happen at this young of an age...
or worms.. but hopefully the pup would have been dewormed BEFORE you got it right??
but hmm.. then again its a mix breed - meaning whoever you got it from (unless from a recognized shelter) wasnt breeding to produce quality pups.. they were breeding soley for profit... as such the pup might not be dewormed.. and might have health issues associated with ignorant breeding...
see a vet
- note - I am not trying to insult your dog in anyway... I am sure its cute and you love him.. just the people who bred him and sold him are scum that is all....(they probably charged you WAY more than he is worth too - as typically these kind of people do that.. prey on people who really want pups)

De-worm him, a type of worm infests dogs' intestines and when it peeps out of the dogs' butts, it has a hook on its mouth which pulls the anal tissue, thus causing it to itch, and the dog to drag its rear end on the carpet.

He might have worms. When my first dog got worms he did that until we treated it. When we got my new puppy she had worms and the vet told us to make sure she doesn't drag her butt on the carpet, but she never did

This can be a sign of worms, so the vet thing you should do is take a fecal sample to the vet and have it checked.

He either has some poop on his but he is wiping off, or he has worms. Check his butt for poop and wash it if needed, keep the hair cut so it doesn't get caught or cause a problem when he goes out.

I have a chi and she does this from time to time and she usually has to poop when she does it. I have also heard if they do this alot it does have something to do with the anal being packed. Might want to call your vet just to make sure everything is ok.
