First off ... Vista shouldn't be on your list. Vista is filled with too many problems and was written by interns at Microsoft (i know some, it is a fact).
What you are basically asking is which is better a wrench, an rock, or a spork. The old additive of comparing apples to oranges. A windows machine, a unix machine, and an apple machine are all totally different.
Windows (XP) is your standard off the shelf software. The majority of software is written for this OS. If you are trying to play game or use other off the shelf software this might be your best choice.
Linux (UNIX) is another commercial OS. The idea of a UNIX based system is that the source code is open meaning that you can edit and change whatever you want as well as write your own. Thus it is free. With Linux you are not paying for the software, you are playing someone for writing it for you. Much less is commercially written for a UNIX machine.
Mac OS X (Apple) is an OS that has been trying to compete with Microsoft for years. The only problem with Apples is that there isn't as much variety in software available for them. It is frustratingly between nothing available -- UNIX -- and everything is available -- Windows. People will tell you that it is safer and there are no viruses. This is because less people use it. If you are a hacker and you want to cause as much devistaiton you are going to target what everyone is using. It is like trying to rob people. Who do you want to go after 1000 people at an expensive jewelry ball or are you going to go after 20 people at a community college. The more people who use Macs the more people will write viruses and malware for them.
It is all a matter of what you are going to use your PC for. If it is just for some word processing then any would be fine. If you are looking to do soem MMO, you might be stuck going with windows.

Linux, BY FAR. Mac and Microsoft will never stop charging you for "new" stuff they come up with. On top of it all, we all know how unstable Microsoft software can get to be, which can be a real pain in the *** when you're working on serious stuff. And Mac... well, not only is it for kids but it also requires special attention and care when something goes wrong with the system, meaning you have to pay money every single time something gets ****** up. Linux, on the other hand, is the most stable system of the three, it has free assistance and is also free in every single way imaginable. It's just the dreamed stuff.

It depends on how you define better.
Vista is feature rich and very pretty, but it requires a LOT of system resources to ensure a relatively consistent level of stability.
Mac OS X is very very highly hyped. Getting it will likely be a letdown, but you will have payed about 40% more for the same components with a different OS, so you will tell everyone what a good buy you made. In an amusing side note, Apple added the infamous blue screen of death to 10.5. That still has me in stitches.
XP is stolid, but stolid is stable, so many still prefer it.
Linux is what you make of it. You can make it light enough to fit on a Palm Pilot, or heavy enough for 64bit CAD/CAM applications with 3D rendering. However, you can also make of it a complete mess and a seemingly endless headache. It's up to you.

I'd say... Linux. Linux crashes less than Mac OS X, and definitely Vista.

It depends on what you are using it for?
Gaming- for now XP, but Vista will soon support all games.
Linux- for database admins and programmmers this is a good free version of Unix.
Mac- If you're an artist, and graphics is your main concern, this is the very best bet.

I prefer XP. I've recently bought a laptop and didn't have the option of XP so I had to go with Vista. Vista is a resource hog. The startup is enormous! However, there are vays to deal with ttheees....on laptops anyway.

Pretty much everyone complains about problems in Vista and how slow it is. One guy was telling me about Vista's speed vs. XP's speed. And I would say XP beats Vista unless you have lots of RAM (like 4GB).
Not sure about the others.
